Investigators in Warren are working to identify the human remains found stuffed inside the wall of an apartment.

A bone found among the debris during an asbestos inspection, lead to the discovery of skeletal remains at an on East Market Street Thursday.

After noticing a hole in the ceiling, a contractor found more human bones tucked into a crawl space. The person's identity is a mystery that investigators plan to solve with the help of a forensic anthropologist out of Washington D.C.

It's too early to know a gender, race, age or height, which are all key factors in narrowing down a potential match.

"Once you have those parameters filled in, then you have a better idea," said Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk, Trumbull County Coroner. "There's so many variable that go into that for example; temperature, humidity, animal activity."

Warren police are now treating the case as a homicide investigation.

The building was purchased about a month ago at a sheriffs sale. Sunrise Pizza's owner says he planned to rip it down, never went inside and never noticed any odor.

Police don't believe the bones belong to any of the three missing persons reported within the city.

Tracking down past renters of the apartment will be the next step in the investigation.

"As of right now we can't really determine a timeline, so the autopsy will help maybe," said Captain Rob Massucci.

It's not known exactly how long the building has harbored this secret, but police say the bones were hidden for at least one year, if not longer.
