One local charity took the phrase, “walk a mile in my shoes” to a unique new height.

The Lions Club of Boardman hosted a blind dinner Tuesday night, where dozens of guests were treated to a spaghetti dinner while blindfolded.

It was all part of an effort to raise money for those who need help paying for eye care.

“We're trying to raise awareness for blind people,” said Mark Gambrel, President of the Boardman Lions Club. “Give people the chance to experience what it's like to eat without being able to see. It's very difficult. People are dropping food all over themselves, so we give them these big aprons to wear. It's a lot of fun, and the proceeds all go to the Melvin Jones Foundation Eyecare and the Pilot Dog Training Program, seeing eye dogs.”

This is only the second year for the Dinner in the Dark event. Organizers say they hope to see the dinner become more popular in the Valley.
