The Mercer County Coroner believes a Sharon man likely shot himself as police were approaching a home on Sherman Avenue early Friday.
Members of the Mercer County Critical Incident Response Team found the body of 36-year-old Tavares Norris on the porch of the home on the 200 block of Sherman Avenue nearly three hours after an approaching Sharon Police Officer saw a man fire a shot on the front porch.
The officer was investigating a reported domestic situation at the time.
Police immediately called in help from surrounding police departments and the county Critical Incident Response Team which surrounded the home.
Sherman Avenue was blocked off south of Prindle Street.
Shortly after 4:30 am, police could be heard on a loudspeaker urging a man to come out of the house.
About 45 minutes later CIRT members approached the porch in an armored car and found the body of Tavares.
Police believe that the shot the officer heard was Tavares taking his own life. Due to a high railing around the porch, the officers couldn't see the body until they got closer.
According to court records, Norris had previously been in trouble with the law.
