Two jailed for shootings on Youngstown's South Side
Two people are in the Mahoning County jail on charges filed in connection with a Friday night shooting incident on Youngstown’s South Side.
Detectives say 29-year-old Bernard Hasley and 19-year-old Janell Calhoun were arrested late Saturday by two police officers who pulled over a car at South Avenue and East Florida.
According to a media release, police considered the pair to be persons of interest in a shooting incident at Market Street and Lucius avenue at around 10 p.m. Friday.
One of the victims was found lying in the middle of the street. Market Street was blocked off in the area during the investigation.
The media release does not identify the victims or list their condition. However, 21 News reported on Friday that two people were wounded. An officer at Youngstown Police Headquarters had no further information when 21 News contacted him on Sunday morning.
During Saturday’s traffic stop, officers say Hasley was carrying a loaded gun with extra ammunition, as well as prescription drugs.
Police charged Hasley and his passenger, Janell Calhoun, with two counts of felonious assault.
Hasley is also charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, having weapons under a disability, and drug possession. Detectives say Hasley was wanted on a warrant issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
