Brooklen Pe'a had 10 kills in 26 attempts for the Youngstown State volleyball team on Friday evening as the Penguins dropped a 3-0 match at Milwaukee. The set scores were 25-16, 25-12, 25-22.
Pe'a accounted for 10 of YSU's 26 kills in the match, and her .269 attack percentage led the squad. Aleah Hughes was next in the kills column with six, and Margaux Thompson and Aimee Beaupre both had three blocks. Setter Alexia Byrnes posted a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs.
Shari Volpis led the Panthers with 13 kills, and three of her teammates had at least nine apiece. Milwaukee finished with 47 kills, which was 21 more than the Penguins had.
Milwaukee took the first two sets comfortably as it held YSU to 12 kills combined, but the Penguins went toe-to-toe with the Horizon League leaders in the third set.
Youngstown State led 10-7 to force a timeout, and the lead grew to four on seven different occasions before Milwaukee made a comeback. The final four-point lead came at 18-14 when Jess Grabowski had a serving error. A YSU serving error gave the Panthers the serve again at 18-15, and it started an eight-point run that ended up being the difference.
Milwaukee led 22-18, but YSU got within 22-21 when Beaupre and Thompson combined for their final blocks of the night. The Panthers scored the final three points to finish their 21st win of the season.
YSU will continue its two-game road trip at UIC on Saturday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
