Austintown hit-and-run suspect captured after chase and crash

A Canfield man suspected of running over a trash collector while allegedly fleeing from a sheriff's deputy has been captured and is now in the hospital.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol tells 21 News that a trooper driving on Interstate 77 in Tuscarawas County spotted a Chevy Suburban SUV wanted for a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian in Austintown a few hours earlier.

Troopers say they followed the SUV into Coshocton County where it crashed along a curve on Route 751.

The driver, 23-year-old Brandon Ferrier was flown by medical helicopter to Akron General Hospital where he is being treated.

Ferrier was already a wanted man when a Mahoning County Sheriff Deputy attempted to pull over the Suburban in Austintown Wednesday morning.

That's when authorities say the SUV struck a trash collector as it tried to pass a Republic Services garbage truck on Allendale Avenue near Kirk Road.

The SUV left the scene of the accident, so authorities put out a call to be on the lookout for a silver 2019 Chevy Suburban with front end damage, a missing passenger side-view mirror, and Alabama license plates.

Investigators believed the SUV was being driven by Ferrier of Canfield, who was already wanted by the Northern Ohio Violent Crimes Task Force.

Troopers identified the victim of the hit-and-run as 56-year-old William Shea of Struthers, who was last reported in critical condition.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol called an accident reconstruction team to the accident scene in Austintown.

Ferrier is wanted for violating his parole in Mahoning County, numerous bad checks and fraud warrants in Pennsylvania, and a motor vehicle pursuit in Mill Creek MetroParks.

Those incidents happened from August to September of this year.
