Monica Boyd, 9, of Youngstown and Robby Kuti, 5, of Austintown and Julie Yeager, 12, of Youngstown unpack some of the candy they and other members of the Camp Fire Council are selling. Three different kinds of candy were being sold for $2 each.

1994: Youngstown Prosecutor Maureen Cronin becomes the first woman elected to the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, easily defeating Judge Bernard Wilkes.

Republican Tom Ridge, a former Western Pennsylvania congressman, is elected governor, defeating Lt. Gov. Mark Singel, a Democrat. Peg Luksik, an independent who ran as a conservative alternative, got 13 percent of the vote, the best showing ever by a third-party candidate. 

Democratic Trumbull County Commissioner Art Magee wins re-election over Republican Lyle Williams, a former congressman, and Trumbull County commissioner.
Democrat Ed Reese, who aligned himself with incumbent commissioners Frank Lordi and David Engler, easily defeats Socrates Kolitsos, who ran as an independent, and Republican Christopher Buck.

1979: John D. King, 18, of Newton Falls,  takes the stand in his own defense, admitting to shooting to death Thomas and Donna Henderson at a Lake Milton service station, but says he only intended to rob the station, not harm anyone. King said he was high on marijuana.

General Motors Corp. confirms plans to drop the second shift at the Lordstown van assembly plant, idling 1,250 employees.

Chaney High golfers win the City Series championship for the seventh straight season under coach Red Angelo. Team members are Ron Sullivan, Monte Duncan, Steve Senediak, Tony Petruzzi and Don D'Alesio. 
1969: Art students from Ursuline, Struthers, Poland, Boardman and Canfield high schools are contributing their talents to the anti-smoking campaign by entering posters in a contest sponsored by the TB and Health Association. 

Stambaugh-Thompson's sale includes a platform ladder for $11.95 and a Black and Decker electric lawnmower for $89.95.

George E. Kirkman, 89, is the last member of the Major Logan Camp 26, United Spanish American War Veterans, in Youngstown. Kirkman enlisted 71 years ago when he was 18.

1944: An explosion blows the top floor off a two-story building at 2723 Wardle Ave. on the Sharon Line.  A roomer, Richard Price, 30, who said he struck a match "and the whole place went up," is in serious condition with burns in St. Elizabeth Hospital. 

Democratic candidates made an almost clean sweep of offices in Mahoning and Trumbull counties, but not Ashtabula and Columbiana counties.

Youngstowners are urged by the Junior League to tune into WFMJ when high school pupils will debate "Should the Voting Age be lowered to 18."
