Trump says Ohio election is 'rigged' after wrong ballots are mailed

Voters in the Franklin County, which includes the state capitol of Columbus, were notified earlier this week that nearly 50,000 voters received the wrong absentee ballots, and the county Board of Election said corrected replacement ballots will be mail.

The Franklin County Elections Board in Columbus blamed the malfunction on a high-speed scanner that proofs ballots for accuracy.

Some ballots had an incorrect congressional race, while others had the correct information but were sent to voters in a different precinct.

On Friday afternoon, President Trump tweeted about the error stating it was "out of control" and is a "rigged election."

The 21 News Department reached out to the Secretary of State's office which oversees the elections for a comment on the President's statement.

Frank LaRose, Ohio Secretary of State, said in a statement sent to us, that:

The Franklin County Board of Elections made a serious mistake and they’ve been working hard to correct it. At the same time, it’s so important to remember that Ohio has bipartisan boards of elections for a reason – to ensure our elections are fair and no Party has sway over the other. Protections are in place to ensure only one ballot is counted for each voter. I’m confident that the Franklin County Board will be transparent in explaining those processes. The bottom line is this: Ohioans can be assured – we will have a safe, secure, and accurate election.

Incorrect ballots already returned to the elections board must not be processed before official vote counting begins on election day, the Ohio secretary of state’s office told Franklin County elections officials. If returned, corrected replacement ballots can be logged in their place, according to the secretary of state.
