Valley teacher helps upgrade student's virtual classrooms

Gia Marra has taught decades in the classroom but 2020 is the first year in her career she hasn't taught her preschoolers in person.

"When I'm doing my remote learning I see kids on the floor, on the couch, on beds," says Marra.

Marra noticed that her student's virtual classroom was missing a classroom staple, a desk, and thanks to a random find of a desk on the side of the road, an idea was born.

"I'm going to fix that up for a student and I brought it home and I was like, I'll see if I can replicate it," Marra adds.

After the first desk was nearly complete, Gia Marra knew...

"I know, I couldn't make one so I knew I was going to make everybody one."

Miss Gia, as her Kirkmere Preschool students call her, took the weekend to craft out 20 desks.

Miss Gia has been teaching in the classroom for about 30 years and she knows once these students have these desks in their home they're ultimately going to feel a little more comfortable and that will really help with their progress in the virtual classroom.

"I want the kids to be excited about learning. They have their own work area now, they'll be sitting at their own desks with their own space to be exciting for them. To get on every day and say I can't wait to get on today and be at my own desk," Marra adds.

Marra will be dropping off the desks to her students on Friday.
