A federal judge has signed off on the settlement of an age discrimination suit filed by a former Youngstown State University professor against the university and its president Jim Tressel.

At the request of attorneys for YSU and John George, U.S. District Judge Simon Oliver dismissed the lawsuit on Monday.

Both sides announced earlier that through mediation, they had reached a settlement of the complaint from the 70-year-old which alleged that the university fired him from his post as Assistant Professor in YSU’s Department of Engineering Technology and “blacklisted” him because of his age and in retaliation for a previous lawsuit he filed more than 10 years ago against YSU when he was denied tenure.

George’s lawsuit received new life last summer when an appeals court overturned a ruling from a lower court judge who had dismissed his complaint in favor of the university, setting up the possibility of a trial in the case.

The complaint sought damages claiming that George suffered financial and emotional distress due to his termination.

No details of the settlement have been revealed in court documents. A transcript detailing what took place in a mediation conference announcing the settlement have been sealed by court order.

Both sides have been ordered to pay their own costs, expenses, and attorney’s fees.
