The NCAA transfer portal is a "double edged sword" according to Youngstown State football coach Doug Phillips.
"Some kids choose to jump in the portal," said Phillips who had three players jump into the portal, including two after the spring football season began.
Football isn't the only sport dealing with it. The Penguins men's basketball team has seen three players who want to transfer and five members of the YSU women's basketball team are transferring out.
This one time transfer allows athletes, that are academically eligible to transfer one time without penalty.
"Sometimes the timing during the season are the difficult ones," added Phillips, who says that's when you build a program and brotherhood and in today's world that's the quick answer."
All the basketball players who entered the transfer portal waited until their seasons were complete.
