The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced that some Velvet ice cream sold at Giant Eagle, Discount Drug Mart, and other stores is being recalled because those products may be contaminated.

Velvet Ice Cream is recalling all of its ice cream and sherbet products made on or after March 24, 2021, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The products, sold under various names, were distributed to Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia through drug stores, convenience stores, and supermarkets. They are packaged in various sizes and containers.

Listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Short-term symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. However, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

No illness or injury has been associated with the recalled products, according to the company.

The issue was identified through the company's routine testing.

The products were distributed and sold in supermarkets from on or after March 24, 2021 with the following product codes, which can be found at the bottom or side of the container:

Anyone who has the recalled product should throw it out or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions may contact Velvet Ice Cream at 800-589-5000 x237 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday. Or visit its website at www.velveticecream.com/contact-us
