New Castle man facing charges after allegedly raping child

New Castle City Police have arrested a man that allegedly raped a child.

Police responded to 219 Park Avenue at 2:53 a.m. on August 25 in reference to a sexual assault of a child.

According to the release, officers on scene learned that Stephen Karenbauer sexually assaulted at least one and possibly more children under the age of 12.

Police say they reviewed video evidence and gathered evidence from the victim(s) and then surrounded the home.

Officers saw Karenbuer run up the stairs and then heard a gunshot.

According to the release, officers found Karenbauer with a self-inflicted gunshot to the face from a 12-gauge shotgun.

Karenbauer was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown with non-life threatening injuries.

He is being charged with rape of a child, two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child and two counts of indecent assault of a child.

The investigation into other potential victims is ongoing.
