How and when to check out Sunday's total lunar eclipse

As the weather warms up, many of us spend our summer evenings enjoying the outdoors. And this weekend particularly you'll want to check out the moon.

Sunday night into Monday morning a Total Lunar Eclipse will be visible throughout eastern North America. That means it will be visible here in the Valley.

21 News Chief Meteorologist Eric Wilhelm says the "main show" will take place between 10:30 p.m. and  2:00 a.m.

If the weather cooperates, the Total Lunar Eclipse will be visible to the naked eye. Although a telescope is preferable. Lunar eclipses are safe to look at directly.

The full Moon will appear a coppery red color.

A Total Lunar Eclipse is much more common than a Total Solar Eclipse.

"We have our big chance coming up in two years for that (Total Solar Eclipse) in 2024, a major once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse in two years," said Wilhelm.

In the meantime, we can enjoy this opportunity. The next Total Lunar Eclipse will take place on November 8th.
