Report: Cancer deaths decrease in Columbiana County

The Columbiana County Health Partners has completed its 2022 Columbiana County Community Health Needs Assessment, which is a data-driven approach to describing the health status of Columbiana County residents, identifying contributing factors that impact health outcomes and prioritizing opportunities for health improvement.

The report is required to be done every three years in order to be compliant with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, that all 501 (c)(3) hospitals must gather, report and adopt an implementation strategy from the report findings.

The health report was broken down by zip code for the county.

Community Need Index

The Community Need Index report, which measures barriers to health based on income, population with limited English proficiency, limited education, uninsured and unemployed residents over 16, and the percentage of people that rent, shared the ten highest need cities/areas which include:

Scores range from 1 to 5, with 5 indicating the highest need.

The report found that life expectancy is below the national average of 77.5 years, with Columbiana County at 76.3 years.

The national average of population without health insurance is 10. 6 percent, while Columbiana Co. fared better with 9.0 percent.

With more than half of the deaths in the county were from self-reported chronic disease, which includes:

Obesity

In Columbiana County, the obesity rate has increased over the last three years - 32 percent in 2016, 34 percent in 2019, 36 percent in 2021, and 37.9 percent in 2022.

Tobacco and drug use

County-wide, 10.45 percent self-reported they smoke daily, 2.92 percent stated occasional cigarette use; while Columbiana has 9.41 percent daily and 2.42 percent occasionally;  Salem 9.52 percent daily use, 1.59 percent occasional use, and East Liverpool has 16.13 percent daily smokers, 2.15 percent occasional smokers.

According to the 2020 Columbiana County Coroner's report, the cities with the highest drug deaths in the county, based on the number of deaths shows 32.4 percent overdose deaths happened in East Liverpool; Wellsville at 11.8 percent; Leetonia, 8.8 percent; Lisbon 8.8 percent; Salem 8.8 percent; East Palestine 5.9 percent; and 2.9 percent in Salineville, Rogers, New Cumberland, Negley, Hanoverton and Homeworth.

Mental health

The report also states that according to the Search Institute Profile of Student Life 2021 Survey Results, of the total combined Columbiana County 7th, 9th and 10th-grade students, an average of 23 percent have attempted suicide at one time, with 28 percent of the attempted suicides from female students and 16 percent of males. The report also stated almost one-third of the students feel sad all or most of the time, and 30 percent of youth in the 7, 9 or 10th-grade classes combined have reported engaging in anorexic or bulimic eating disorders.

Adults in Columbiana County that received the following preventative medicine in 2021:

Columbiana County also ranked 13th out of 88 counties for having the most vehicle crash deaths in the state.
