Yellow Brick Place and Earth Works creating sculpture at Boardman Park

If you go walking through Boardman Park the next couple days, you may notice a pretty neat sculpture that's being built.

It's a project by Yellow Brick Place Cancer Wellness Center and Earth Works designed to honor anyone that has been touched by cancer.

"We offer the heart and soul to people that are dealing with a very difficult time in their lives and we want to make sure that they know that we love them and we are here for anything that they need," Kathleen Moliterno, Executive Director at Yellow Brick Place said.

Building the sculpture are youth campers at Boardman Park and Walt Hermann, who owns Studio 83 Arts in Sharon.

"I really like working with Yellow Brick Place, they're a great organization," Hermann said. "I think they do a lot of good for the community and all around it's just a fun project for kids to get into."

The kids are gathering sticks and cutting off any extra pieces or branches to make them as smooth as possible. They then weave the sticks together between two trees to create a wall that will be in the shape of a heart.

"They are working very hard, they are very respectful of the fact they have clippers in their hands as well so they are just working as a team which is amazing," Moliterno said. "We are going to have different groups throughout the day so this is our oldest group and the younger groups will come out and then help with the littler things to fill in but these guys are handling the heavy lifting."

"It seems a little weird in the beginning when you are getting going, you just got these weird sticks laying there but once it all comes together and gets filled in, it's a beautiful wall that will be here for a few years and you can always work on them and maintain them or tear them down and build a new one if you want," Hermann said.

Hermann says its an immensely rewarding project for everyone involved.

"Give the kids something to do, gives the community something special to look at, something to make them smile," Hermann said. "I was greeted with a lot of smiles this morning and we had almost nothing done. Lot of questions, everyone was very positive, they loved how it was looking already so I think just putting smiles on people's faces is important."

The idea for the project came from a board member of Yellow Brick Place and they want it to stand as a permanent reminder of the beauty they see in their daily cancer survivors.

Hermann will be back out Thursday from 10:45 to 2:45 to work on the sculpture. Anyone can stop by to watch and supervised children are encouraged to help out. The sculpture is located right behind home plate of softball field number one.
