Penguins open practice in heat & sun
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Football is in the air around the Mahoning Valley.
With high school practices already underway, Youngstown State joined the parade holding their first practice Wednesday morning.
They went two and a half hours in the sun and temperatures that started to rise mid morning.
Coach Doug Phillips wants his team to concentrate on themselves and get better each practice.
"I don't want to hear about opponents. If you go into our locker-room there's not one opponent up on the schedule," lamented Phillips following today's practice.
"We're focusing on us and where do we need to get better and where do we need to build depth," he added.
The Penguins appeared to be sync and have a grasp of the first day, something that was missing a year ago.
Sophomore Demeatric Crenshaw took the majority of snaps with the first unit, followed by Mitch Davidson, Max Blanc and Beau Brungard.
WHO'S RV????? : There's a RV parked outside Stambaugh Stadium. When asked if he was living in it during camp, Phillips said, "No comment." It's worth noting when he was the head coach at Springfield, he lived in a trailer during two a days.
FUTURE SCHEDULES: The Penguins do not play South Dakota State or Northern Iowa this season due to scheduling rotation. When Murray State joins the conference next season, the Penguins will not play three teams in the conference. Even with the rotation they'll always play Indiana State & Illinois State due to geography.
