1997: Relatives of prisoners in the new private prison in Youngstown question Warden Willis Gibson during a 3-hour meeting in Washington, D.C., about prisoner safety and alleged abuse at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center. Prisoners from D.C.'s soon-to-be-closed  Lorton prison are being transferred to CCA's Youngstown. 

Roderick G.W. Chu is named chancellor by the Ohio Board of Regents, which oversees the state's 70 public colleges, universities, and medical schools. He replaces Elaine H. Hairston, who is retiring. 

The Tod Squad, an outreach program, has identified about 100 children from low-income families in Mahoning County who are eligible for free health care, but there is enough funding to cover another 250.

1982: Salt trucks are out in force to handle the first measurable snow of the winter in the Mahoning Valley. 

Youngstown police arrest a 21-year-old Boardman man for suspicion in the death of Debbie Jurich, 22, of Poland, who was found shot to death in a car at Princeton and Glenwood Ave.

LTV is getting rid of its ocean shipping unit, Lykes Bros. Steamship Co., as part of a long-range strategy that could have an impact on Youngstown industry. 

1972: Liberty Township police and fire crews will be cut to skeleton crews following the defeat of a 2.7-mill levy. 

Donald L. Rominger,  53, of Poland, a sailor with 30 years experience at sea, testifies at a Coast Guard hearing that he tried to correct an error by the helmsman shortly before the African Neptune struck a bridge in Brunswick, Ga., causing a collapse in which ten died. 

A 16-year-old Boardman youth is charged with carrying a concealed weapon after he appeared in Juvenile Court with a 45-caliber handgun under his coat. A new rule will require all defendants to remove their overcoats. 

1947:  J. Howard McGrath, chairman of the National Democratic Party, urges Young Democrats of America meeting in Cleveland to work so that "the liberalism of Franklin D. Roosevelt will not die by the deeds of the reactionaries who now control Congress."  The Mahoning County delegation of about 25 was headed by Frank Colla. 

Mrs. Geraldine Clark of Kinsman, an unsuccessful candidate for justice of the peace, files a campaign expense account showing she owes her husband $60 for "use of his car and neglect of house and farm work." 

Youngstown City Council is urged to approve legislation clearing the way for $340,000 in improvements at Youngstown Municipal Airport.
