Transitional housing for teens in foster care transitioning into young adulthood could be coming soon to the Mahoning Valley.
Non-profit organization, Moab House builds houses for youths who are aging out of the foster care system.
21 News caught up with Moab House Executive Director, Marcie Consiglio, who tells us the organization's biggest goal is to stress the importance of the issue of young adults fresh out of foster care having trouble finding a home and live independently describing this as a "community wide issue."
That's why Moab House is planning to build a new traditional home for these youths right here in the Mahoning Valley. Consiglio told 21 News she could not disclose where in the Valley the house would be located at this time.
According to a Facebook post from Moab House, the organization had found a building that suits their needs perfectly, but says their budget has increased because of this.
Consiglio tells 21 News Moab House did apply for the Community Development Block Grant from the City of Youngstown, but says community funding and involvement is also "absolutely key" to have this vision fully realized.
Consiglio explained that youths who age out of the foster care system often have trouble finding a place to stay due to a lack of credit, familial care, etc.
That's why this transitional housing would give these youths their own apartment-style living space along with two house parents to guide them on learning life skills such as cooking and budgeting for groceries each week.
From there, once these youths turn 18, they would have the necessary skills to budget on their own and in turn can be recommended to local landlords despite not having credit.
