Cleanup efforts continue in East Palestine following the Norfolk Southern train derailment on February 3.

Most of the equipment has been removed from Sulphur Run after surface water sampling continued to show favorable results this week.

Sediment cleaning in the stream has led to improvements in water quality and reduction of contaminants as well.

According to Governor Mike DeWine's Office, fish have been seen returning to areas of Sulphur Run that had been abandoned by aquatic life after the derailment. Crews are working to evaluate the sediment there moving forward.

Plans are underway to begin sediment cleaning in parts of Leslie Run from East Palestine to Bull Creek. That work is expected to begin this upcoming week.

The Ohio EPA continues to oversee the removal of hazardous waste.

Since cleanup efforts began, approximately 14.8 million gallons of liquid wastewater have been removed. Another 37,300 tons of excavated soil has been removed so far.
