More Mercer County communities are being warned of the West Nile Virus detected in mosquito populations in the county.

Two press releases from the Mercer County Conservation District name both Hempfield Township and the City of Hermitage.

These warnings follow previous alerts from the Conservation District warning residents of Mercer Borough and the City of Sharon last week.

Folks in these communities are urged to take extra precautions including applying insect repellant, wearing long-sleeved clothing when outdoors during dusk and dawn and eliminating standing water such as birdbaths, discarded tires or any containers capable of retaining standing water.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, West Nile Virus symptoms can include blindness, disorientation, coma, convulsions, headache, high fever, muscle weakness, neck stiffness, numbness, paralysis, stupor, and tremors.

These symptoms may last for several weeks, and the neurological effects may be permanent.
