Feed Our Valley: Cortland Area Cares Senior Food Boxes

A Cortland foodbank is making sure senior citizens in Trumbull County have enough food each month by giving out boxes of non-perishable items.

On the second Wednesday of the month, a line of cars wraps around the Cortland Area Cares parking lot.

“It’s organized chaos,” Donna Kittle, of the Cortland Area Cares Food Bank said about the line.

It's a smooth operation as the cars pull up with their trunks open and the volunteers load in boxes and bags. Each car is a senior citizen getting some non-perishable items to get them through the month.

“All canned goods, dry milk, cereal, things like that,” Kittle said.

Each month they give out about 65 boxes all filled with food donated by Second Harvest Food Bank. On top of the non-perishable items, the volunteers also pick up extra surprises each week like pastries and fruits.

Cortland Area Cares has their big monthly food give away on the last Wednesday of every month, but the senior box give away is a bridge between those distribution days to make sure cabinets are always full.

The food bank has been giving out senior boxes for three years - it’s something to help those who are 60 and older on fixed incomes.

“Today's world, it's tough to make ends meet,” Kittle said. “It just helps them have a little spare money for something else.”

Anyone who is 60 and older in Trumbull County can fill out a form to see if they meet the income requirements to join the senior box give away at the Cortland Area Cares Food Bank at 1000 Fowler Street in Courtland. Ohio.
