Champion man who assaulted man, police officer with axe sentenced to six years in prison

CHAMPION TWP., Ohio - A Champion Township man who assaulted a man as well as a police officer with an axe in September of 2022 was handed his sentence Tuesday afternoon.
Forty-year-old Randy Pence was sentenced to six years in prison on two counts of felonious assault.
The charges stem from an incident from September of 2022 when police responded to a home on Meadowbrook Drive in Warren Township after Pence assaulted a man who lived there with an axe followed by barricading himself in a shed.
Police tried to get Pence to come out of the shed, but Pence threatened to defend himself against anyone who came in and put items in front of the door so officers could not get in.
When police were able to open the door a few inches, police say he threw the axe through the gap striking an officer on the arm. The officer was not seriously injured.
According to the Trumbull County Prosecutor's Office, Pence has a criminal history including numerous domestic violence convictions dating back to the age of 18.
When Pence asked Judge Ronald Rice not to give up on him, Rice simply replied, "You blew all your other opportunities. It is now time for punishment."
