Youngstown rescinds ARP money from barber school, but plans to give it back

The city of Youngstown is poised to take back $55,000 in ARP money from a barber college - and planning to give it right back.

That's according to Eric Garrett, founder of Beyond Expectations Barber College on Glenwood.
City council's agenda next week includes a measure to rescind the ARP money, originally meant for scholarships for five students at the barber school.
Garrett tells 21 News the administration had reservations about using the money for that reason.

21 News has reached out to Sixth Ward Councilwoman Anita Davis, whose ward the college is in, for comment as well.

Nevertheless, Garrett says Beyond Expectations will still get the funds.

"The administration thought it'd be better if we used the money for fixed assets, barber shops, salons, stations, tool kits and supplies, things of that nature that will stay in Youngstown, as opposed to using it for scholarship funds and then the students decide to move to Boardman or Canfield," said Garrett.

Beyond Expectations is expanding, too.
Garrett will be opening a beauty school in the same building as his barber school.
He's having an open house December 17 from 3-6pm to introduce the community to the new venture.
