Preparing for subfreezing temperatures

The big freeze starts Sunday, and it will hold steady for a few days, with the lowest temperature reaching only 6 degrees.

With these frigid temperatures, you will want to ensure none of the cold air creeps inside your home. Experts advise sealing off rooms that are not being used and all windows and doors with plastic film.

"There's double sided tape you put around it, you put the plastic up and hit it with a hair dryer," Ace Hardwood general manager, Kevin Stredney said while discussing the use of their 5 window insulation kit.

What about preventing frozen pipes?

Stredney recommends wrapping exposed pipes with insulation, keeping the cabinets under your bathroom and kitchen sink open so the warm air inside your home can circulate, or leaving the faucet running with cold or hot water to keep the pipes warm and prevent them from bursting.

Experts suggest disconnecting water hoses and safeguarding outdoor faucets.

"The biggest thing is to make sure that your faucets are protected outside because they will freeze, and as soon as they unfreeze, you're going to have water everywhere," Stredney said.

Space heater safety is another important practice.

Fire officials say the heater should only be placed in a well-ventilated area on a hard and leveled surface. They should also be plugged into a wall outlet rather than a power strip.

"If you're leaving the room or going to bed, make sure that the unit is unplugged. Make sure the unit is at least three feet away from any combustible surfaces or material." Warren Fire Chief Ken Nussle said.
