The Senate Commerce Committee unanimously passed legislation to designate Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport as a primary airport on Thursday.
This designation will allow the facility to receive funding from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, which provides grants for the planning and developing public-use airports.
The bill was first introduced by U.S. Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and J.D. Vance (R-OH) in April.
The bill was included as part of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2023.
"Today we took a major step forward in ensuring that Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport can affordably, effectively, and reliably serve the Mahoning Valley and allow visitors and businesses to easily reach Northeast Ohio," said Brown. "With this legislation, the Youngstown Airport will be able to serve more people and provide more opportunities for the entire region's economy to grow," Brown said.
The Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is the only airport that has an Air Reserve Station but does no active commercial air service.
