The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a serious injury crash in Mahoning County involving a police car.

The crash occurred just before 1 a.m. Thursday in Green Township as Goshen Police District Officer Zachary Hodgson was on his way to investigate a car-deer traffic accident.

Troopers say the Ford Explorer Police cruiser had its siren and overhead lights on when it was struck by a Nissan Altima crossing the intersection at State Route 165 and U.S. Route 632.

According to the patrol, the Nissan Altima was northbound on US Route 62 when it entered the intersection on a green traffic signal and struck the police SUV that was traveling westbound on State Route 165 on a red traffic signal. The cruiser went off the right side of the roadway and overturned several times.

Troopers say Sue Leclerc, age 61, of Salem, who was driving a 2018 Nissan, was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown where she was listed in stable condition.

Officer Hodgson, age 26, was to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown in stable condition.

Officer Hodson was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Sue Leclerc was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the Patrol.

The intersection of State Route 165, and US Route 62 was closed for a brief time and has since reopened.
