Two Youngstown men are going to prison for their roles in the 2022 shooting death of Isiah Helms.

Jamiyah Brooks, 20, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to charges of voluntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence.

Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge Maureen Sweeney immediately sentenced Brooks to 17-and-a-half to 22 years in prison.

It wasn’t until March last year that Brooks was deemed competent to stand trial in the case.

A second suspect, 35-year-old Nathaniel Austin Jr. of Youngstown, was arrested in Tennessee in 2022 and brought back to the valley to face a trial next week on charges of aggravated murder, murder, tampering with evidence, and a weapons violation.

Austin Junior pleaded guilty to the tampering charge and was sentenced to three years in prison.

Helms’ body was found at the Mt. Hope Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Liberty Road in February 2022 shortly after he was reported missing.
