Nestle USA has issued a recall of metallic mugs sold in Starbucks-branded gift sets due to a potential burn hazard.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recalled products were sold online and in store at Walmart and Target, as well as Nexcom between November of 2023 and January of 2024 for about $10, $13 or $20 apiece depending on the set.
The gift sets came with a ceramic mug with metallic coating with the Starbucks logo on it and were sold in 11 and 16-ounce sizes in one of these sets:
- Starbucks holiday gift sets with two mugs
- Starbucks classic hot cocoa and mug
- Starbucks peppermint and classic hot cocoa and mug
- Starbucks holiday blend coffee and mug
The CPSC reports that if the mugs are microwaved with extremely hot liquids, the mugs can overheat and break, which in turn poses a burn hazard.
So far, there have been 12 reports of mugs overheating and breaking resulting in 10 injuries including nine severe burns / blisters on fingers and hands and one that required medical attention.
Anyone who has one or more of these recalled products should immediately stop using them and either return them to the place of purchase or contact Nestle USA for a full refund.
Consumers can either receive cash or a gift card when returning the products to the store or a check when contacting Nestle. To contact Nestle, click here. You must attach a photo of your product or the product identifier code to your message.
