Norfolk Southern experienced mechanical issues blocking several roads in the city Tuesday and caused some headaches in the City of Salem.
As of 3:00 p.m., only one railroad crossing in the city located on South Lincoln Avenue was open. All other railroad crossings are currently closed due to a train with a mechanical issue.
Salem Safety and Services Director Joe Cappuzzello tells 21 News this could pose a challenge to first responders, but all dispatchers and first responders are aware of the issue.
Cappuzzello says first responders are currently taking alternate routes and the city can call in for mutual aid if needed.
There is currently no time frame as to when these crossings will open back up. For now, drivers should plan for alternate routes as needed.
21 News reached out to Norfolk Southern media relations Connor Spielmaker who said a train stopped for about an hour due to a minor mechanical issue – and has since been repaired and continued on.
