2021 Sales tax levy 'paving dividends'

As the weather gets warmer, you'll probably notice crews out paving roads, especially in Mahoning County.

A road tax approved in 20-21 is paying dividends on stretches like Raccoon Road in Austintown.

The quarter percent sales tax has generated $19,884,802.66 since the first projects began in 2023.

$5,157,565.46 has been committed to Township roads, while $6,000,000 dollars has been expended for county roads. $2,365,850 will go toward bridge projects.

"We've been able to really see the fruits of the labor of all these projects coming together.", said Mahoning County Commissioner Dave Ditzler.

So far that money has equated to more than 100 township roads and 130 miles of county-owned roads.

One of those projects is coming together in Austintown on New Road between Racoon Road and State Route 46. Seeing a major artery get some rehabilitation is something Austintown Trustee Monica Deavers called a major boost.

"I think it's great for Austintown--I think it's going to enhance the aesthetics and also help the safety and convenience of our residents.", said Deavers.

It's a good start for the county with six million dollars in funds still remaining as it will continue to collect those taxes through 2027. Levies passed in townships throughout the county that raise money for the roads as well as Public Works money increases the spending power of the 2021 Sales Tax money collected.

When asked if they'll approach voters to renew the levy when it expires in three years, commissioner Ditzler says that will be up to the residents and townships--but that they'll cross that bridge when it comes time.
