Youngstown Schools held their annual 'Honors' gala to recognize staff members who are excelling in their positions.

Awards were given in several categories, including "Lifetime Achievement" to Penny Wells, who started Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past over 16 years ago.

The "Teacher of the Year" award went to Melissa Cooper.

But it wasn't just teachers who received awards.

The night served to recognize all employees' outstanding efforts in supporting students and the community.

"We're all educators, so our bus drivers are the first teachers kids see in the morning, so they absolutely should be recognized and honored. Our cafeteria staff, everybody. They all play a part and make sure our kids have a great educational experience," said Youngstown City Schools Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor.

Batchelor also said first and foremost-- its about their kids. But it's also important to recognize those who work with them.
