One hundred and fifty-seven Revolutionary War veterans who died in Columbiana County are buried at various cemeteries.
Four of them are buried at Long's Run Church in Calcutta, and for some their final resting place is without any symbol of their contributions to American history.
Steve Barlow, president of the Mahoning Valley Sons of the American Revolution organization, said it is time to recognize their lives and legacies.
"I think they should be recognized for it, and their families should be recognized for it. A lot of people don't even know they have Revolutionary War ancestors. These people really sacrificed." Barlow said.
As a descendent of a Revolutionary War veteran, Barlow wants to keep their memory alive by using grave markers and a memorial with all of their names inscribed, but first he needs help from the community.
Although the monument project costs $5,000, Barlow said the sacrifices that the soldiers made are priceless.
If anyone is interested in donating, Barlow said checks can be made payable to the Mahoning Valley Sons of the American Revolution Chapter and mailed to him at 335Thompson Ave. East Liverpool, OH 43920.
According to Barlow, the monument would be the first one in the county that recognizes the Revolutionary War.
