Neighbors may hear explosions, gunfire during military exercises near Newton Falls

Anyone hearing the sound of gunfire or explosions in the region around Newton Falls and into the Valley shouldn't be alarmed.

Camp James A. Garfield Joint Military Training Center will be using explosives and hand grenades during training conducted Wednesday through Friday, June 5-7, at the facility near Newton Falls.

The press release states that sounds from the exercise be heard farther away than what occurs during normal operations. There will be intermittent explosions and gunfire at the facility during the annual training season.

The Garfield Joint Military Training Center is an Ohio Army National Guard training site in Portage and Trumbull counties that consists of about 21,000 acres, with various small arms and machine gun weapons, ranges that are used for training events for both weekend and annual training for Army and other Department of Defense units in the midwestern US.
