A Youngstown man has learned his fate after committing what prosecutors described as the "brutal" rape of an 11-year-old girl back in 2018.

Mahoning County Prosecutor Gina DeGenova tells 21 News 23-year-old Sergio Gonzalez was sentenced to life in prison with his first chance of parole after 10 years.

If he's ever released from prison, Gonzalez must register as a tier three sex offender for the rest of his life.

Earlier in July, a jury found Gonzalez guilty of two counts of rape stemming from the 2018 rape of a girl who was 11 years old at the time.

DeGenova was previously quoted as saying cases like this are the reason for the creation of the Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office's Special Victims Unit.
