Youngstown residents updated on Mill Creek sewer project

Folks in Youngstown got a closer look at the next phase of the Mill Creek Interceptor Sewer project Wednesday.

They gathered at the Michael Kusalaba Library to hear about the designs, what crews are doing in the early stages and what to expect in the future.

As we've reported, the US EPA ordered enhancements for sewer systems in Mill Creek Park.
They carried a multi-million dollar price tag, but the city countered with a more cost effective plan.
The city tried to change a 10 year old consent decree, but those changes haven't been approved by the EPA.
So we asked the city whether proceeding with its own plan could be a gamble.

"I'm not going to speak to anything about our consent decree, that's still a court case, I can't speak to that. But we're going forward with the project, we have no reason to believe that it's not needed or that it's going to change drastically," said public works director Chuck Shasho.
