Ohio residents warned of turnpike scam

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission is warning Ohio residents of a scam targeting people with fraudulent texts claiming unpaid tolls are due.

According to the Commission, mobile phone users have received fraudulent texts from scammers requesting payment for unpaid tolls through fake websites.
 
The release reminds people that Ohio Turnpike never requests customers to make payments through text messages. Also, collections of unpaid tolls or toll violations do not occur by text.
 
The only websites affiliated with the Ohio Turnpike are E-ZPass accounts through ezpassoh.com and ohioturnpike.org.

• Anyone receiving suspicious tolling text messages should delete them without clicking the link.
• If you click on the fraudulent link and provide any personally identifiable information, you should immediately contact your bank or credit card provider. 
• Victims should also file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, including the phone number from where the text originated and the website listed within it.
• Individuals with questions about tolls incurred should check their account or call the toll agency’s customer service at 440-971-2222.
