Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw has been fired following an inappropriate relationship between him and another employee with the railroad company.
According to a press release, Norfolk Southern's Board of Directors unanimously voted to fire Shaw. The company's Chief Legal Officer and Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs. Nabinata Nag was also terminated.
Shaw and Nag were engaged in a consensual relationship.
Following Shaw's firing, Norfolk Southern's Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Mark George has been promoted to President and CEO, effective immediately. George will also join the Norfolk Southern Board.
"Mark has played an integral role in our recent progress and brings decades of financial experience and strong operational expertise. He embodies our corporate values and is a champion of our safety culture," said Norfolk Southern Board Chief Claude Mongeau.
Jason Zampi will now serve as Norfolk Southern's Chief Financial Officer and Jason Morris will now serve as acting Corporate Secretary.
Shaw and Norfolk Southern became familiar names in the Mahoning Valley in February of 2023 when one of the company's trains derailed in the Village of East Palestine releasing hazardous vinyl chloride into the village.
Since then, several hearings have been held and several laws have been proposed to enhance rail safety to prevent derailments like this from happening in the future.
