Police in Boardman are investigating a shooting early Friday morning.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Oakridge Drive. Police Chief Todd Werth tells 21 News officers responded to reports of a male victim with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The man was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

According to a police report, the victim told police the suspect is the current boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend.  Police are not releasing the suspect's name at this time.

Police say the shooting happened after the victim came to his ex-girlfriend's house. The ex-girlfriend told police she was in the house with the suspect when she saw someone in the driveway.

The ex-girlfriend went on to say the two went outside to investigate when the victim jumped out from behind the car and shouted at them and that's when the victim was shot.

Police spoke to the victim at the hospital where he told his side of the story. The victim told police he went to the house and had a verbal argument with her about the breakup, but there was no physical violence or threats of physical violence involved.

The victim said no words were exchanged between him and the suspect before he fired the gun.

Police say the ex-girlfriend had security cameras at the house, but police discovered that some cables from those cameras were cut and there were no recordings of the incident.

When police spoke to the victim about this, the victim told police he "thinks [he] did that" and further said he was going there "to do some dumb s**t."

The ex-girlfriend further told police the victim had previously slashed the tires of her car and that she had a protection order against him, but police say he was never served this order, so there is no active protection order involving him.

Police say they were able to meet with the suspect and briefly detained him, but released him after he provided further information. The report does not specify what this information was.

No charges have been filed yet, and no arrests have been made, but Werth tells us detectives are working with the Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office to determine charges.
