The Golden String Inc. organization is well known around the Mahoning Valley for supporting people with additional needs.
On Thursday the group celebrated the opening of GabbaCamp with a ribbon cutting. The camp is located at 4730 McCartney Rd. in Lowellville.
It is nestled on 38 acres of land and offers several accessible cabins that provide campers with a modern camping experience. The organization told 21 News the campground is an extension of their mission. It's a place designed with accessibility in mind, whether using a wheelchair or walking.
"The main thrust was having folks that are in wheelchairs out in nature. That's what we're working really hard to do," Jimmy Sutman, daily director of operations, for Golden String Inc. said.
The camp provides a space where people can participate in a variety of activities such as, fishing, campfires, scavenger hunts, and more.
Creating employment opportunities at GabbaCamp is also a vital part of its operations.
"We want our folks with disabilities to work here to do the cleaning, landscaping, painting," Sutman said.
