Colsen has issued a recall of its fire pits due to a potential "flame jetting" hazard.
According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), the fire pits consist of a concrete open reservoir intended to contain burning liquid alcohol. Alcohol flames can be invisible and lead to flame jetting when refilling the fire pit reservoir.
Flame jetting is an event that can occur when pouring alcohol when fire flashes back the alcohol container and suddenly propels burning alcohol out of the container and onto people nearby.
Additionally, alcohol can splash or leak out of the fire pit reservoir, which can cause a flash fire that can spread and create larger, hotter flames that can escape the pit.
This can lead to injury and cause burns that can be serious and deadly in less than a second.
So far, the CPSC has received 31 reports of flames jetting and flames escaping from the concrete container resulting in 19 injuries.
Two incidents resulted in third-degree burns to more than 40% of victims' bodies and at least six incidents resulted in surgery, prolonged medical treatment, admission to burn treatment facilities, short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy or permanent disfigurement.
The recalled products came in various shapes including the round and rectangular ones pictured above, as well as hexagonal, square and skull shapes. The pits range from five to 18 inches wide.
The pits were sold through various online retailers including Colsen's website, Amazon, Wayfair, Walmart, Sharper Image, FlipShop Grommet, Meta and TikTok between 2020 and 2024 for between $40 and $90 apiece.
If you have purchased any of these recalled pits, you're asked to stop using them immediately and dispose of them. According to the CPSC, Colsen does not have the financial resources to offer a refund to customers.
You're asked not to donate or resell any recalled products, as it is a federal crime to do so.
