21 WFMJ archives / February 15, 1985 | Youngstown's Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini survived 15 bruising rounds in a WBA lightweight title rematch 40 years ago with Livingstone Bramble in Reno, Nev. Bramble retained the title he had taken from Mancini seven months earlier with a narrow but unanimous decision.

2000: A strike by Teamsters representing 90 housekeeping and maintenance workers at Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital enters its fifth day. The hospital has 25 patients in rooms and continues to perform outpatient procedures.
Famed defense lawyer F. Lee Bailey testifies about his efforts to clear the name of Dr. Sam Sheppard during a suit brought by Sheppard's son, Sam Reese Sheppard, against the state of Ohio alleging wrongful imprisonment of his father for the 1954 murder of his mother, Marilyn. Sheppard was acquitted in 1966 and worked for a while at Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital in 1968 before dying in 1970.
Local educators, parents, and citizens call for a moratorium on the state's mandatory proficiency tests. State Sen. Robert Hagan of Youngstown says he will introduce legislation to stop the tests until they are proven effective.
1985: Gov. Richard Celeste says his first priority is to win GM's Saturn plant in Ohio. He assures the Mahoning Valley that it has a fair shot among the other Ohio sites being presented to Detroit.
The Youngstown Post Office has a supply of new stamps for when the new first-class postage rate of 22 cents goes into effect. Although the office will be closed on Sunday and Monday for Presidents Day, vending machines in the lobby have been stocked with the new stamps.
A former coed at Slippery Rock University sues the university and a fraternity, alleging negligence after she became drunk at a fraternity party and fell asleep underneath a tractor-trailer at a truck stop. When the truck pulled out, she was dragged for 30 feet. She is seeking $20,000 for her injuries.
1975: General-duty nurses begin returning to work at the Youngstown Hospital Association, ending a strike called by the Ohio Nurses Association on Dec. 23.
Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Forrest J. Cavalier enjoins the city of Youngstown from collecting dock fees from owners of 14 properties at Lake Milton whose deeds contain riparian rights.
1950: Flood waters resulting from two days of continuous rain swirl over low-lying sections of Youngstown, Warren, and Sharon.
First Ward Councilman John W. Barber says his request for legislation prohibiting standing passengers on city buses is based on an Akron ordinance, but an investigation shows that Akron does not have such a law.
Golfer Babe Didrickson Zaharias is named the No. 1 female athlete for the first half of the 20th century in an Associated Press poll.
