As the White House considers federal spending reductions, the city of Youngstown is planning an event to showcase the importance of federal programs that support local neighborhoods and businesses.

The city's Department of Community Planning and Economic Development announced the inaugural National Community Development Day, scheduled for April 24, 2025.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Covelli Centre, Wean Foundation Park, and the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheater.

Beverly L. Hosey, director of the Community Development Division, stated that the event is timed to coincide with National Community Development Week, which runs from April 21-25, 2025. This timing is intentional, as it aligns with the congressional appropriations process, emphasizing the significance of Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and HOME programs.

"These initiatives play a crucial role in improving neighborhoods, supporting local businesses, and enhancing the quality of life for residents," the city said in a news release.

The free event will feature food trucks, a bounce house, children's games, live music, dance performances, competitions, and vendor booths. City officials and state leaders are expected to attend.

Businesses, nonprofit organizations, and service providers are invited to participate by setting up tables with literature, giveaways, and sign-up sheets. There is no cost to participate, but organizations must provide their own tables. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

The city stated that the event will serve as a platform to educate the community and connect local organizations with the people they serve.
