Former Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero dead at 62

A former general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins has died at the age of 62.

According NHL.com, former Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero died on Wednesday at the age of 62. His cause of death was not immediately revealed.

Shero was the general manager of the Penguins from 2006 until 2014. He led the team to the Stanley Cup finals in 2008 and saw them earn the title of Stanley Cup Champions the following year.

In a statement posted by Pittsburgh Penguins Center Sidney Crosby, who has played for the Penguins since 2005, Crosby says Shero was a big part of his early years with the team.

"He gave me a lot of opportunities as a young captain and supported me throughout his time. He did so much for our organization and my memories with him are special. I am grateful for our time spent here and that we were able to share a Stanley Cup Championship together," Crosby said.

According to NHL.com, before his time with the Penguins, Shero was an assistant GM for the Ottawa Senators from 1993 to 1998 and assistant GM for the Nashville Predators from 1998 to 2006.

Following his time with the Penguins, Shero went on to become the general manager for the New Jersey Devils from 2015 until 2020. Most recently, he served as the senior advisor to the general manager of the Minnesota Wild.
