Health departments in Mahoning and Trumbull County are receiving nearly $46,000 in grants to lessen the spread of viruses caused by mosquitos including West Nile, La Crosse Encephalitis and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
This is part of $650,000 in Mosquito Control Grants from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2025.
Locally, Mahoning County Public Health received $23,306 and the Trumbull County Combined Health District received $22,500 from this funding.
Ohio EPA Director-Designate John Logue said, "These grants are essential to help health departments around Ohio fight mosquito-borne diseases."
He continues, "The funding provides education, outreach and necessary equipment to better protect all Ohioans."
The funding will support mosquito control efforts, including surveillance, larval control and the removal of breeding sites like illegal scrap tire piles.
Ohio EPA and the Ohio Department of Health has awarded $9.2 million to local health departments and communities for mosquito control programs since 2016.
