A handful of Family Dollar stores throughout the Mahoning Valley have shut down in the past year.
The Family Dollar store that is located next to the Sparkle Market in Columbiana is the latest location that has been added to the list of closures.
Mark Hamrick, a senior analyst for Bankrate, told 21 News that he attributes the closures to mismanagement at the corporate level.
"Reports have indicated that the stores were not managed well, and you know that ultimately is something that sends customers away." Hamrick said.
Along with the store in Columbiana, a source tells 21 News the Salem location is also on the chopping block.
Another business expert, R.J. Hottovy head of analytical research with Placer.ai, believes Family Dollar stores are no longer offering consumers a treasure hunt experience.
"Consumers are really looking for that treasure hunt feel," Hottovy said. "I'm going to go into a store find something unique or something that I can't find anywhere else at a competitive price. That has been what's really working in the retail environment, particularly as consumers are more cash strapped."
Both retail analysts also stated that the closures are a direct result of increased competition in rural areas, like the Discount Drug Mart in Columbiana.
