Mercer County, Lawrence County and the City of Hermitage are all teaming up to respond to the challenge of recycling glass according to a news release.
In partnership with the Pennsylvania Resources Council, Carry All Products (CAP) Glass and Owens-Illinois, the Travelling Glass Bin is coming to New Castle to collect glass.
Anyone looking to recycle glass may do so beginning May 31 at 430 Court Street, New Castle.
Glass will be accepted from 7 a.m. to sundown beginning May 31 and continuing until June 12. The release indicates the location is a self-serve drop off.
Glass accepted at this event include all colors of glass bottles, jars and jugs. Caps, lids and labels are acceptable. The release encourages anyone dropping off glass to empty all containers.
Examples listed in the news release of accepted items include:
Items not accepted during this recycling event include the following:
"Glass from these collection events goes straight back into the manufacturing of new glass. We call this bottle to bottle recycling," says Megan Gahring, Deputy Director for the Recycling/Solid Waste Department.
Gahring continued," Just think, your glass pop bottles that you are recycling today, could be back on the shelf as a new glass bottle in as little as 30 days."
"When glass is one of the most recyclable materials we generate in our homes and is 100% recyclable without any loss in purity or quality, we don't want to see this valuable resource end up in a landfill," Gahring said.
Additional glass events are scheduled in the year from July 5 to July 17 at the Elks Lodge in Greensville and then from September 27 to October 2 in Hermitage.
Events may be found on the Lawrence-Mercer Recycling/Solid Waste Department website or Facebook page.
