Ray & Mascari Inc. of Indianapolis is recalling its 4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes due to potential Salmonella contamination, the company and the Food and Drug Administration announced.
The recalled tomatoes, packaged in 20-ounce plastic clamshells with the UPC # 7 96553 20062 1 and master case labels with lot codes RM250424 15250B or RM250427 15250B, were sold at Gordon Food Service (GFS) stores in multiple states, including Ohio and Pennsylvania.
According to the announcement, Hanshaw & Capling Farms of Immokalee, Florida, which supplied the tomatoes to Ray & Mascari, initiated its own recall due to the possible presence of Salmonella in its facility. Ray & Mascari then repacked and distributed the affected tomatoes.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience fever, diarrhea (possibly bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, Salmonella can lead to more severe conditions.
The recalled tomatoes were distributed to GFS stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
The clamshell containers are labeled "VINE RIPE TOMATOES" and indicate they were "Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc., Indianapolis, IN 46204." The master cases are cardboard boxes containing 12 of the 4-count clamshells and bear the specified lot numbers.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall to date.
Consumers who have purchased these 4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes are urged to discard them and not consume the product.
