Youngstown mayoral candidate Derrick McDowell has submitted his nominating petitions to appear on the November 4 General Election ballot in Youngstown as an independent candidate for mayor.

McDowell is running as an independent and aims to face off against either incumbent Democratic candidate Tito Brown or Third Ward Councilwoman Samantha Turner, who is also running as a Democrat, depending on the results of the May 6 Primary Election.

McDowell says his campaign is not about political advancement, but about "purposeful assignment."

"I'm running for mayor to ensure that the work surrounding 'Reclaiming Our Identity' and securing Youngstown's future is shaped by its people, not just politics. Our city is rich in culture, talent and resilience. It's time for leadership that brings transparency, accountability and opportunity to every neighborhood," McDowell said.

McDowell's campaign focuses on equitable economic development, youth engagement, revitalizing public spaces and improving city services. He also pledges to host community conversations and listening sessions to continue the city's direct engagement with residents and stakeholders.

"We've met people where they are - at their homes, their block watches, businesses and their churches. And we're not stopping now. This campaign is for everyone who believes in Youngstown - and together, we're going to take back and tell our own story as we rebuild it," McDowell said.

McDowell is the founder of the Youngstown Flea, a monthly market held in downtown Youngstown featuring several local vendors.
