Light voter turnout expected in the Valley for May 6 Primary election

Boards of Elections in the Mahoning Valley are reporting a light voter turnout for the May 6 Primary Election.

Trumbull County Board of Elections Director Stephanie Penrose tells 21 News it has been a very slow day so far and she does not expect high turnout numbers by the end of the day.

Penrose attributes the low turnout to most communities not having candidates to vote on with the only communities that do being Warren, Niles, Girard and Newton Falls. The rest of the county is issues only.

Kim Fusco with the Columbiana County Board of Elections is reporting similar results predicting a 12 to 15% voter turnout by the end of the day.

Like Trumbull County, Fusco says Columbiana County does not have very many candidates and there is no Democratic ballot this time around, just Republican or issues only.

In terms of issues at the polls, the only one reported appeared to be an isolated incident at a polling place in Warren where voters who requested a Democratic ballot were given an issues only ballot instead.

Tom McCabe with the Mahoning County Board of Elections says turnout has been slow too even for the Youngstown Mayoral Race between Democratic candidates Tito Brown and Samantha Turner.

McCabe says he expects things to pick up bit once people get off work and is predicting about a 7 to 8% voter turnout by the end of the day.

Penrose told 21 News that issue was rectified before the Board of Elections even became aware of it.
